Football weekend: Chargers kick off tonight
After a busy Zero Week, the 2009 high school football season settles in with several Week 1 matchups in the area.
Clear Springs kicks off the weekend of action when the Chargers host Manvel at 7 p.m. tonight at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Hopes were high for Clear Springs this season, but a shocking loss to Dekaney in Zero Week has the Chargers looking to even their record against a young, but tough, Manvel squad.
The action heats up on Friday night with Clear Brook, Clear Lake, Clear Creek and Friendswood all in action.
Clear Brook made the most of Zero Week by dominating perennial playoff team Alice, 43-26. The Wolverines will be looking at a 2-0 start to the 2009 season when they hit the road to take on Houston Nimitz at 7:30 p.m. at Thorne Stadium.
Clear Lake will be searching for its first win of the season after falling to Houston Aldine last week. The Falcons hit the road and will take on Strake Jesuit at 7 p.m. on Friday, trying to avoid and 0-2 start to the season.
Clear Creek will also be looking to bounce back from a 35-7 loss in Zero Week, but will have to do it against a solid Kingwood team at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kingwood is coming off an upset of Pearland.
After passing on a Zero Week game, Friendswood gets going Friday night with it's season opener. The Mustangs will travel to Dayton to take on the Broncos at 7 p.m.
