After 45 years, the 2010 Lunar Rendezvous Festival is trying out a music night.
It just seemed to fit with the whole idea of the festival, since the theme this year is Lunar in Rhapsody," said Ellen King, the festival's publicity chairwoman. I think it's a wonderful thing."
Live" on the Lake is set for 6:30-11:30 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at Club Classic, 2513 NASA Parkway in Seabrook. Admission is $25 per person.
The evening is one of 13 events making up this year's festival, which opened with a kick-off party April 18 and will conclude with a wrap-up party Thursday, July 29.
It was Festival Chairman Wendy Shaw who proposed the idea of introducing the newest event.
I thought it would be an appropriate event because of my love for music," said Shaw, a League City resident. Usually the general chairman puts their spin on the festival."
Live" on the Lake will open with an acoustical performance by songwriters Mike Mancy of the Mike Mancy Band and Jason Eady from Jason Eady and the Wayward Apostles.
Their music will have a Texas/country/alternative sound to it.
Following their performance, event organizers will hold a signed guitar auction, which will include a new Viper Electric Guitar signed by Toby Keith and Willie Nelson.
The auctioneer also will accept bids that evening for private dinners, one with Mancy and one with Eady, to take place during a performance by Seth James.
They're really attractive guys, and they're really nice and they're talented," Shaw said.
Caf Classic, which already is underwriting hors d'oeuvres that evening, will provide the winners' meals.
Also available by auction is a personal serenade by James during his show.
It will be fantastic music," Shaw said. Seth James is known for his amazing guitar playing."
Lunar Rendezvous was founded by Maggie Plumb DeNike. It started as a series of events and eventually became a nonprofit organization that raises funds for the community.
Lunar Rendezvous supports the Bay Area Museum, local scholarships and other organizations that promote the arts and sciences or help the community.
Last year, Shaw said, Lunar Rendezvous raised $117,800, which went to such organizations as The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake, University of Houston-Clear Lake, Houston Symphony League Bay Area and Interfaith Caring Ministries, among others.
Kim Emel is serving as chairwoman of Live" on the Lake. She and her husband, Brad Emel, own Club Classic. Also working on this event are Shannon Markle, vice chairwoman; Millie Lucas and Shaw.
