Watch for Clear Springs pair at Bayou Bowl
Clear Springs quarterback Phillip Miller and wide receiver Deche' Milburn were a potent combination as seniors, and they're hoping to duplicate that magic at the 2010 Bayou Bowl on Saturday, June 12, in Baytown.
It is a tremendous honor to be a part of the Bayou Bowl and have the opportunity to get to know the other players," Miller said. We've competed against a lot of them over the years and it will be something special to be on the field with them as teammates."
Miller was 254-of-435 for 3,296 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and Milburn had 81 receptions for 1,344 yards and 16 touchdowns for last year's 11-3 Chargers, and they'll team up once again as Texas all-stars in the eighth annual event that also features Louisiana's top graduating seniors.
Deche' has always been a great teammate," Miller said. Being in an all-star game with him is going to make it even better and more special."
Miller is one of two quarterbacks with Dawson's Darian Lazard for the Texas all-stars, who will be under the direction of Pearland coach Tony Heath.
Milburn is headed to Texas State University and Miller continues to explore different options.
I'm excited about being able to work with all of these talented student-athletes," Heath said. As a staff, we have to decide where everyone will fit in and help Texas to another win."
Texas is coming off a last-second 17-14 victory in 2009 and leads the Bayou Bowl series 4-3.
Players and coaches arrive in Baytown on Tuesday for media day and the first of five practices that are highlighted by a Thursday workout at Reliant Stadium.
There's a golf tournament on Wednesday at Eagle Pointe, and trips to a water park, Houston Raceway Park and the Kemah Boardwalk for the players.
It's quite an honor for the coaches and players to be involved with this game," Heath said. I've had the opportunity to help out in the past, and I'm extremely fortunate to be the head coach this year."
Deer Park coach Chris Massey is the Texas team football director, and Heath's staff includes assistant head coach Richard Carson (from College Park), defensive coordinator Greg Alexander (Hastings), offensive coordinator John Snelson (Pasadena Memorial) and special teams coordinator Bob Jones (Shepherd).
Hastings assistants Brian Layton, Toriano Taylor and Jeff Ceasar, and Pasadena Memorial assistants Gerry Cole, Ron Frick and Henry Coleman complete the Texas staff.
Chris Massey is the unsung hero of this year's Bayou Bowl, and he's been instrumental in keeping the game at a high level," Heath said. Coach Massey kind of took over for the game's creator, (former Baytown Lee coach and current Lewisville coach) Dick Olin, and (Massey) has just done a tremendous job and deserves a lot of credit."
The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Network and streaming live on the FSN Web site, and rosters and more information are available at www.bayoubowl.org.
