Scammer tricks store's cashier out of $100
League City police are looking for a quick-change scammer who made off with $100 from a sportswear store.
The theft occurred between Tuesday evening at Jammin Sportswear, 2925 S. Gulf Freeway.
League City Police Lt. Bruce Whitten said a man entered the store and a cashier rang up his $5 purchase.
While paying for it, he asked the cashier for change for a $100 bill. While the cashier got the change, the man took the $100 bill back.
The cashier didn't notice and gave him the $100 in change.
The scam artist left, and the theft wasn't discovered until a store manager noticed a shortage of money in the cash register.
It's a fairly common scam, but we don't get a bunch of them," Whitten said. There's a real method to it in dividing the cashier's attention."
The thief is described as an Hispanic man who is around 30 years old, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds to 240 pounds. He had facial hair and a heavy Spanish accent, and he was wearing a blue work shirt and pants.
Those with information are asked to call 281-338-8210.
