Coaches pull back in 7-on-7

The UIL gently reminded football coaches about off-season involvement rules concerning 7-on-7 and other activities in a recent e-mail, and the always-positive Tim Teykl of Terry thinks it's all good.
The summer 7-on-7 season continues to be tweaked and it continues to evolve, and there's always been and will always be great dialogue with the UIL," the longtime Rangers coach said. The UIL is our governing body in high school sports, and thank goodness we have them, and the bottom line is what's best for the kids, and what can be done to keep things wholesome and good.
It's going to be okay."
Head coaches can't be directly involved with out-of-season things such as 7-on-7, and even though there's been no rule infractions, someone somewhere may have seen the line inching closer and closer.
The way to look at it is to be proactive and not retroactive," Teykl said, and the message to make sure and do the right thing is part of that."
Katy is the Terry SQT defending champion after beating Dulles 35-25 in last year's finals, and according to Teykl, Katy has captured multiple titles at Terry having won at least three in a row.
Katy is in Pool C with Cy Falls, Foster and Memorial, and Dulles isn't participating at Terry this season.
The host Rangers are in Pool A with Fort Bend Austin, Klein Collins and Texas City, Pool B has Chavez, Cinco Ranch, Hightower and Strake Jesuit, and Pool D is made up of Alief Taylor, Clements, Cy Creek and Westside.
The tournament has at least two teams that have already qualified for the 7-on-7 Class 4A-5A State Tournament on July 9-10 at Texas A&M University in College Station.
Chavez and Klein Collins earned state berths with second places at the season-opening Houston Texans SQTs hosted by Chavez on May 22-23.
Chevez fell to Lamar 25-21 in the May 22 finals, and Klein Collins lost to San Antonio Alamo Heights 25-15 the next day's championship.
The top two finishers in every SQT advance to state.
In two weeks at the Texas City SQT, Pearland and Dawson try to repeat as finalists (the Oilers beat the Eagles 38-33 last year).
The Woodlands and A&M Consolidated also host SQTs on June 12.
