Squirrels killed in League City backyard

A League City man who feeds squirrels in his backyard complained to police over the weekend that someone's been picking off the squirrels with a pellet gun.
League City Police Lt. Bruce Whitten said teenagers who live nearby are suspected of killing six squirrels in two weeks, but police are not investigating because the deaths don't violate the penal code that covers animal cruelty.
Whitten said police may refer the killings to the local game warden since it's against the law to harvest game animals out of season.
Police said the squirrels have been killed behind a house in the 2200 block of Bennigan Street, but the homeowner didn't report the deaths to League City police until Sunday, when he found one dead with a pellet gun wound to the chest.
The man said he found the first dead squirrel on March 14 but thought the deaths might have been caused by cold weather until he discovered the pellet gun wound over the weekend.
He's pretty upset," Whitten said.
