Sex offender jailed for not updating address
Friendswood police have arrested a sex offender they say didn't let them know he'd moved to town.
James Bryan Hampton, 42, of Friendswood was arrested last Thursday, police said. He is charged with failing to register as a sex offender.
In 1993, Hampton was convicted of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl in Lubbock County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety Sex Offender Registry. He is listed as a low-risk offender, police said.
Hampton was stopped last month by Friendswood police for a traffic violation in the 500 block of Belmar Lane, where he said he'd been living for about a week. A computer check showed that he was a previously convicted sex offender registered with a Houston address, police said.
As a sex offender, he is required to register with local law enforcement within seven days of moving into a new residence. Because Hampton missed his deadline, Friendswood police said, a warrant was obtained for his arrest. He was transferred to the Galveston County Jail on $20,000 bond.
