Mother-daughter texting dispute investigated

League City police are investigating whether a mother punched her teen-age daughter in the head after a dispute over text messages on the girl's cell phone.
League City Police Lt. Bruce Whitten said the girl told police that her mother's punch caused her head to hit a wall last Friday evening. She said her mother then took the cell phone from her so that she couldn't call police for help.
The mother disputed her daughter's account and told police that she disciplined the teen within reason and could take away the phone if she wanted to because she owned it, Whitten said. She said she also had to use physical restraint to keep her daughter from following through on threats to leave the house.
The mother said her daughter was being unruly and denied punching her, but bruises were found on the girl's arms, Whitten said.
Declining to say what the disputed text messages contained, Whitten said the mother was "just unhappy with the content."
Charges have yet to be filed in the incident, but it will likely be referred to the Galveston County District Attorney's Office after police finish their investigation, Whitten said.
There's that fine line between reasonable discipline and abuse," he said. Some are obvious, and some are harder to make that determination."
