Freeway won't close tonight after all [update]
Road crews finished work on the Clear Lake stretch of the Gulf Freeway early last night, enabling them to cancel plans to close the freeway for two more nights.
The northbound lanes from FM 518 to Bay Area Boulevard were to be closed to traffic for three nights starting Tuesday, but the contractor was able to quickly switch the northbound freeway traffic to new pavement in just one night.
Interstate 45 South is being widened from Medical Center Boulevard to half a mile south of NASA Parkway.
Karen Othon, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Transportation, said that when the $36 million project is finished this summer, probably around June, there will five freeway lanes in each direction plus three frontage road lanes on each side.
All that's left is completion of the southbound freeway's main lanes from Bay Area Boulevard to the NASA Parkway.
