Lutheran South Academy Congratulates Cheerleaders
The Lutheran South Academy High School varsity cheerleaders recently came home with big cheers and awards after competing at the National Cheerleaders Association Cheer Camp held at Southern Methodist University from July 21 to 23.
"They competed in the small varsity division with 470 participants," said Aaron Schneider, the director of admissions at Lutheran South Academy. "LSA cheerleaders were awarded superior ribbons in all skill categories."
Moreover, the team earned the technical excellence award for jumps, as well as the camp's Herkie Team Award for Leadership. The squad, competing against 10 other teams, gained its trophy for the Game Time Top Team on the last day of the event. Additionally, it brought home the NCA Spirit Stick.
Four members of the LSA varsity high school cheerleaders were named all-Americans: Barbara Newsom, Elena Gaidousek, Abby Hancock and Amy Dedmon. Tori Canada, Makenzie Rogers, Sophie Baggott, Rachel Gintert, Elizabeth Andress and Alex Foret were honored with all-American cheerleader nominations.
All-American is one the highest cheerleading awards that individual participants can receive. Of the thousands who try out in the various cheerleading and dance camps throughout the country, less than 10 percent are chosen as all-Americans.
And now, the challenge and excitement is not over for the squad.
"The South cheer squad was (also) awarded a bid to the national championships in Florida," Schneider said.
