Friendswood may look at restricting smoking

An ordinance that prohibits smoking in public places like restaurants and bars could soon be on the horizon in Friendswood.
Mayor David Smith said he is interested in City Council working this year on a measure that would mimic other public smoking ordinances in the cities around us." The city does not currently have any such type of ordinance, he said.
It's something I plan on putting on the table for council to consider because I think it'd be pretty easy," Smith said. We don't have very many bars. We do have a couple of them that won't like it and there may be some existing restaurants that don't like it, but I think by and large our citizens will support it."
Smith said he would like for City Council to address smoking with an ordinance prior to the new restaurants that the city expects to be built in Old Friendswood because of voters' recent approval of two propositions that allow the sale of alcohol in the area that includes downtown, which had been dry since 1963.
I'd rather have it place now rather than later," Smith said.
