All southbound lanes and one northbound lane of the Gulf Freeway will close Friday night for road construction and reopen Saturday morning.
The left lane of the freeway southbound at Calder Road in League City will close Friday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m., according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The rest of the freeway's southbound lanes will close an hour later.
At 11 p.m., the freeway's left northbound lane will also be closed. All lanes will reopen by Saturday, Jan. 30, at 7 a.m.
During the complete closure of the freeway's southbound lanes, motorists heading that direction will be detoured to the frontage road at the Calder Road exit, continue through the intersection, and merge back on to the freeway just south of Texas 96.
Local law enforcement will assist with the closure to ensure that traffic flows smoothly, TxDOT said.
Friday's closure will allow crews to switch southbound traffic to new pavement. The work by is part of a $21 million project to build a new flyover from the Gulf Freeway to Texas 96.
The construction is being done by contractor W. W. Webber and should be finished in April.
In a news release announcing the closure, TxDOT said it carefully reviewed the schedule for the project's remaining closures to minimize the impact on Galveston during the upcoming Mardi Gras season. The construction's next overnight closures are estimated to take place at the end of February for northbound lanes and another one would be at the end of March as this project nears completion.
There are no scheduled closures during Mardi Gras, which is Feb. 5-16.
