Driver accused of fleeing Friendswood wreck
An Alvin man was arrested after running away from a two-vehicle crash Friday in Friendswood, police said.
Robert Ward, 41, is accused of driving while intoxicated with an additional charge of "accident involving injury," Friendswood police said.
He was driving eastbound and had stopped to make a left turn into a business in the 1100 block of West Edgewood about 6:45 p.m. Friday when his 2000 Dodge van was struck from behind by a 2008 Mercedes Benz, police reported.
The collision caused Ward's van to overturn. After being helped from the vehicle by a witness, he ran, police said. He was located about 45 minutes later running near Coward's Creek and was taken into custody.
Police said Ward registered a .093 on a breath test, which is above the legal limit. The charge of driving while intoxicated was filed as a felony because of previous convictions. The second charge is also a felony.
Ward was transferred Sunday to the Galveston County Jail on $50,000 bond. The crash's other driver, Kimberlee Smith, 40, of Friendswood was treated at the scene and released.
