Man killed in I-45 hit-and-run [updated]
A pedestrian trying to wave someone down on the Gulf Freeway in League City was killed by a hit-and-run driver Tuesday night.
The victim, whose name is being withheld until it can be confirmed by the Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office, was a Houston man in his mid-20s. [Jan. 14 update: The Galveston County Daily News identified the victim as John Michael Pea, 20, an Angleton native living in Houston.]
League City Police Sgt. John Jordan said the pedestrian was in a northbound lane of Interstate 45, just south of FM 646, when he was hit around 9:45 p.m.
The driver who hit him continued driving instead of stopping to help, Jordan said. Another driver swerved and missed hitting the victim, but then someone else hit him. That driver stopped and called police, but the victim died at the scene.
Police are asking for the public's help in finding the first driver, but Jordan said they're not looking at criminal charges.
We're just trying to identify who struck him initially and figure out what happened at the scene," he said.
Police have interviewed five witnesses but do not have a description of the first vehicle to hit the victim.
We've seen some surveillance video to where the freeway seems to be pretty crowded," Jordan said. We feel that there's other witnesses out there that may have seen something that haven't called the police department yet."
Police are asking local businesses to inspect their parking lots and dumpsters for any evidence, interview employees who were working at the time, and review any surveillance video for signs of drivers discarding evidence or acting suspiciously.
Those with information are asked to call 281-338-4182 or 281-338-8210.
