Pearland Roundup: District volleyball races to begin
With just over a week of the season in the books, 24-4A volleyball coaches are already looking closely at a district schedule that begins Tuesday, Aug. 23.
"I really can't believe how fast everything goes from tryouts to two-a-days to scrimmages to the first week of games to district,," Friendswood coach Kelly Beck said. "You really wish you had a little more time to prepare, but we're really happy with the first week on matches, and we're hoping to get off to a good start in district."
The Lady Mustangs, who swept Clear Lake and Barbers Hill last week for a 2-0 start, begin district at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Texas City.
The other 24-4A openers have Manvel at Dawson, Clear Falls at La Marque, and Santa Fe at Ball at the same time, with new member Fort Bend Ridge Point open.
"We tried to get the players fired up for the first two matches because we knew they were going to be tough," Beck said. "Clear Lake beat us last year, and because we knew they have powerful hitters, we focused on defense and blocked and played very well across the back row."
Friendswood and Dawson are at the Bryon Nelson High School Classic in the Dallas area on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 19-20, in a final tune-up for district play.
Friendswood is in a pool with Dumas, Elgin and Keller, while Dawson is in with Waxahachie, Hereford and Wichita Falls Rider.
District 24-4A co-member Santa Fe is also at the event and in a pool with Austin Lake Travis, Springtown and Cleaburne.
Senior setter Alex Beaver, senior middle blocker Annie Mitchem and junior outside hitter Jill Bergeson were a major part of the Lady Mustangs' attack last week, along with sophomore hitter Harley Kelly, and senior hitter Shawna Spozio, who replaced injured senior blocker Brittany Ward (ankle surgery).
"Beaver is doing a good job spreading the offense around, and she has a nice selection of hitters to go to," Beck said, "and you'll be hearing those other names like Bergeson and Mitchem a lot this season."
Dawson's football booster club has "Eagle Fest" going from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, at The Rig in Pearland.
The major event of the evening is an 8 p.m. home scrimmage against Atascocita.

Manvel QB coach to Texas City
Manvel football lost quarterbacks coach Chad Butler to District 24-4A co-member Texas City, to become the Stingarees' new offensive coordinator.
And opponents will now look for Butler to open it up.
"I think we'll see some of the same spread offense that we use in Texas City," Manvel coach Kirk Martin said, "and that's going to make an already interesting district race even more interesting, and Texas City just might be a major dark horse."
Manvel plays at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Texas City.
