Clear Lake Scouts spend night on battleship
Eighteen Cub Scouts from Clear Lake Pack 956 recently became honorary sailors of the USS Texas battleship.
The Scouts were able to experience Navy life during their one-night sleepover, which included several tours and stories of the warship's historic past.
The Scouts, along with their parents and leaders, slept in a berthing area below deck and got a military wake-up call at 6:30 a.m. from banging trashcans. The boys were divided into two groups and given guided tours of many features of the ship that ranged from the engine room, sickbay, a 14-inch gun turret and the bridge.
While aboard, the Scouts participated in flag ceremonies and learned some of the Navy's customs and courtesies like hand salute, nomenclature and requesting permission to board and leave the ship.
