'Gathering Place' meetings offer programs for those with memory loss
Individuals who have Alzheimer’s disease or other types of memory loss are invited to attend the Gathering Place activity program at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
Gatherings are held the first Wednesday of each month between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and give people who are memory impaired the opportunity to form community, have fun and engage in stimulating activities.
Each month’s program has a different theme, and all activities are built around that theme. July’s Gathering Place will have a luau theme, and participants will learn how to hula, play games and do other activities, in addition to sharing in a meal.
“While the program is meant to give loved ones a break from the daily rigors of giving care, each month’s activities are so enjoyable that many decide to stay and participate themselves,” said Heidi Clark, pastoral associate. “Caregiving can be so isolating. What we’ve found in the four years that we’ve been doing these monthly programs is that the caregivers appreciate the company and the opportunity to see their loved ones so engaged and having fun.”
The program is open to all individuals regardless of their faith backgrounds.
St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is located at 18223 Point Lookout Drive in Nassau Bay.
