Friendswood journeyed all the way to the state semifinals last season, and after surviving a grueling District 24-4A agenda, and Lamar Consolidated in the first round, the Mustangs are ready to keep going.
Wheatley (7-4) is the next obstacle for Friendswood (8-3) as the teams square off in the Class 4A-III Division I area round at 7 p.m. Saturday at Galena Park ISD Stadium.
You must take it one week and one game at a time, but there's also long-range goals," Friendswood junior quarterback Pete Maetzold said. With three district games to go, and the race in high gear, we put it out there to win nine straight."
If Friendwood does that, win its final nine games, it will be good for a state title, and so far, it's four down, five to go.
Maetzold had a career night in the 36-20 win against Lamar Consolidated, completing 16 of 19 passes for 228 yards and five touchdowns two each to Matt Kennemer (six receptions for 177 yards) and Keith Canada (four for 53).
The Mustangs also rushed for 220 yards on 46 attempts, with Andrew Cole gobbling up 110 on 19 tries.
We had some turnovers near the goal line that were costly, but we didn't get down on ourselves," Maetzold said. We were able to stay confident, and we called the right plays at the right time, and I really never had pressure all night.
Our offensive line (seniors Travis Batts, Sean Golz and Hunter Ratcliff, and juniors Jose Sanz and Ben Compton) did another great job."
Wheatley (7-4) held off Waltrip 20-14 last week after tying for second in District 22-4A with Sterling and Washington, and finishing behind Jones.
The Friendswood-Wheatley winner meets the winner of the Huntsville-Beaumont Central area-round match-up next week.
