Space Center Intermediate band receives national recognition

The John Philip Sousa Foundation recently awarded the Sudler Silver Cup Award to CCISD's Space Center Intermediate Band.

Led by Director Donald McCandless, the Space Center Intermediate Band was one of three schools in Texas to receive the coveted award. To be eligible, a band must have an accomplished program over a period of seven years with the same conductor in place for seven years, too.

The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation and sponsored by Louis and Virginia Sudler, and recognizes truly great middle school bands of outstanding musical excellence.

The award was initiated in 1985 and since that time, fewer than fifty bands have been designated as outstanding middle school and junior high school bands. A jury of previous cup recipients, who meet at the international Mid-West Band Convention in Chicago each year, selects the recipients from applications throughout the United States and Canada.

The two other Texas bands selected were Artie Henry Middle School in Cedar Park and Forbes Middle School in Georgetown.
