Clear Lake/Bay Area Roundup: Wright secures silver
Clear Lake's Kiara Wright equaled the best mark of the day, but ended up with the silver medal in the Class 5A girls high jump at the University Interscholastic League State Track and Field Meet last week in Austin.
Wright, a junior, finished in a three-way tie for first place at 5 feet, 9 inches with Arlington's Orlene Parris and Westfield's Khalyshia Mayo, but Parris took the gold with fewer misses, and Mayo was third due to more attempts along the way.
"Kiara gave a tremendous effort," Clear Lake coach James Menze said. "She worked very hard all season to get to state and have a high finish once there, and she's looking forward to going back in 2012 and taking the gold."
Wright earned the state berth with top finishes in District 24-5A and Region III.
Clear Creek had a pair of seventh places at the state event with seniors Matt Smythe in the 5A boys 300-meter hurdles and C.J. McElroy in the boys long jump.

"They are my first mixed doubles team to qualify for the state tournament, and they really gave a great effort against an outstanding San Angelo Central team," Clear Creek coach Pat Marrie said. "They came back strong in the second set but came up just short."
Siegel and Carrithers will be honored along with their Clear Creek teammates during the Wildcats tennis Banquet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, at Las Brisas on IH-45.
"We want to thank all of our players for what was a great spring season," Marrie said.
