Baseball: Mustangs on playoff gallop
Drawing on experience that dates back to 2010's run to the region baseball finals, the Friendswood Mustangs advanced to the second round with a come-from-behind bi-district series triumph over Foster last week.
Friendswood dropped the opener 5-4 at Foster, but answered with home wins of 2-1 and 17-16 to move on against Davis in this week's area round.
The Mustangs host Davis in a single game playoff at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Friendswood High School.
"It was a pretty wild one against Foster," Friendswood coach Charlie Taylor said. "We came out flat and making mistakes in the first game, and played a little harder at home and pulled out the second game, and then hit seven home runs and came from behind at least twice in game three.
"Our kids have been there before, been behind and didn't give up, and that's even going back to last year."
Pete Maetzold hit two dingers, and Allen Cook, Jordan Wood, T.J. Scott, Will Hibbs and Jordan Bolton had one apiece in the third game against Foster, and Maetzold, Scott and Bolton were part of a three-home run third inning.
Davis beat Scarborough 15-5 in a one-game bi-district encounter, and Davis won the coin flip with Friendswood for a single-game area meeting this week.
"We just about always want a series because anything can happen in one game," Taylor said. "The kids will have to come prepared and ready to play.
"We have not seen Davis this season, but they have a scrappy team with a bunch of good pitcher, and they like to compete."
The Mustangs beat Davis 12-0 last season and 2-1 in 2009 in the area playoffs.
The Friendswood-Davis winner meets HISD Austin or Angleton in the region quarterfinals next week.
