Girls golf: Clear Lake going for 5A gold

If you can't make it to this week's University Interscholastic League Class 5A State Golf Tournament in Austin, Clear Lake coach Karolyn Criado wants you to know you can still follow her Lady Falcons.

According to Criado, you can check for live totals and updates on Thursday and Friday, May 12-13, at www.HighSchoolGolfScoreboard.com, which has been approved by the UIL to score the state event.

"We want everyone to come out to the tournament if possible, but if not, we want our supporters to track the scores and send our girls good wishes," Criado said. "We'll take all the support we can get."

The Lady Falcons will compete for 5A team honors against Cinco Ranch, The Woodlands, Austin Westlake, Allen, El Paso Eastwood, and San Antonio Reagan and Churchill beginning at 8 a.m. both days at the Jimmy Clay Course.

Clear Lake features senior Courtney Ferguson, juniors Bristol Gunderson and Taylor Stockton, and sophomores Kristen Bush and Cassie Weyland.

Clear Creek's Amanda Mire (girls medalist) and Travis Dennis (boys medalist) are also set to compete for individual awards.

Westlake is the defending 5A girls state champion, and Allen was second, The Woodlands third and Eastwood fourth last year.

The Lady Falcons finished sixth at state in 2010.

"We're looking to get into the top three, and maybe more, and we'll have to do it against teams that have state experience," Criado said. "Hopefully we can draw from the state experience that Ferguson, Stockton and Bush have, and that will help us climb the ladder."

Ferguson will be playing in her third state tournament before heading to Oklahoma State.
