Fire destroys Clear Lake apartments

Fire destroyed a dozen units Friday night at a Clear Lake-area apartment complex at Bay Area Boulevard and University Green.
The fire erupted around 7 p.m., but Bay Area Boulevard was closed deep into the night while firefighters worked to put out the huge fire at the University Green apartments, between Space Center Boulevard and Reseda.
Investigators do not yet know what caused the fire.
This morning residents who were searching a muddy mountain of rubble for any possessions that might be salvageable said they have nothing now but the clothes on their backs.
Birod Guragai, a student from Nepal, said he and the cousins he lives with knew nothing about the fire until someone started banging on their door last night and warned them to get out.
"We just watched it burn," he said. "That's all we could do. Nothing."
Put up in another apartment for the night by the apartment complex's managers, Guragai mostly worried about losing passports and other legal documents.
"Money, we lose it today, we make it tomorrow," he said. "Passports . . . it will be a long process, and we can't go home with passports."
