Three local HS grads face off in UTSA-SHS showdown
Three local high school graduates played key roles as Sam Houston State built a 6-1 lead and held off UTSA 6-5 on Sunday.
Clear Brook High School graduate Molly Fichtner led the way for the Roadrunners. Fichtner went two-for-four on the afternoon with a double, her Southland Conference-leading eighth home run and a pair of RBIs. Fichtner’s line drive home run over the fence in left was her second in as many days.
Fichtner, a freshman catcher, played at Clear Brook High School from 2006-10.
Friendswood High School graduate Hailey Wiginton led Sam Houston with a two-for-four day at the plate, scoring two unearned runs in the second inning.
Wiginton played at Friendswood High School from 2003-07, where she was a four-time first-team All-District player. Wiginton also played club ball for Texas AFA.
Montgomery High School graduate Shelbi Tucker basted a solo home run for SHS in the loss.
At Montgomery, Tucker was an All-state and All-District shortstop for coach Michelle Rochinksi on teams that earned four consecutive state playoff berths.
Tucker was the two-time defensive player of the year, and Montgomery County offensive MVP in 2007.
