Jones boys hold off Friendswood in 4A area playoffs
MANVEL – Jones came out of the gates strong Friday night but needed a fourth-quarter surge to hold off Friendswood's comeback try.
Ahead 23-7 after the first quarter, the 15th-ranked Falcons watched as their lead dwindled to one possession in the fourth before holding off the Mustangs, 60-55, in the area round of the Class 4A playoffs.
"It was a great start and the kids responded when they needed to," Jones coach Quincy Shelton said.
Paced by point guard Joe Miles, who finished with 14 points, eight steals and eight assists, the Falcons set the tempo by using their speed and athleticism in a spread, half-court set.
Friendswood (24-12) clamped down with a 10-6 edge in the third quarter and trailed by six, 42-36, going into the final eight minutes.
The Mustangs pulled within three points four times in the fourth as Jones struggled from the foul line in the double bonus.
The Falcons shot 10 for 23 from the charity stripe in the second half but made four of their last six. None was bigger than JaMarc Brown's free throw with 14 seconds to play to put Jones ahead four points, 59-55.
"You put yourself in such a big hole to start the game and it's tough to come back against a quality team like that," Friendswood coach Jeff Keener said. "The kids fought hard, and I give them every credit in the world."
Nolan Harvey paced Friendswood with a game-high 26 points.
Broderick Harris had a team-high 16 points for Jones, and DeMarcus Johnson scored 14.
