High school roundup: Friendswood seeks points in 4A swim meet
Led by senior Meagan Westhoven, the Friendswood Lady Mustangs head into this week's University Interscholastic League State Meet looking to pile up points and for a high team finish in Class 4A.
"We have some outstanding swimmers who are continuing a strong tradition of state participation for the program," Friendswood coach John Little said. "This is what they've worked for all season, and you always try to peak at just the right time."
Westhoven qualified in the girls 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke, and also on the 200 medley relay with senior Kelsey Castro, and juniors Rachel Cragin and Hailey Lutz, and the 400 freestyle relay with senior Alexandria Taylor, and Lutz and Cragin.
The Lady Mustangs were second in Region 6 to Stratford (502-367), and along with the Lady Spartans, are among the team favorites at state.
"There's always a tremendous field in Austin, and it will be the same this year," Little said. "We just want the girls to perform at their best, and that's all we can ask for."
Cragin will also go in the girls 100 butterfly, and freshman Justin Bertelsman is carrying the banner for the Friendswood boys in the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle at state.
The Mustangs were third with 212 points placing in back of Stratford (479) and Kingwood Park (440) at the 4A Region 6 Meet last week at the Conroe ISD Natatorium.
The UIL State Meet in Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19, in Austin.
More state swimming
Manvel is sending two swimmers to state with junior Geoffrey Spano the fifth seed in the 4A boys 500 freestyle, and sophomore Rebecca Roudbari going in the girls 100 backstroke.
Junior Claire Zhang is Dawson's only state qualifier advancing in the girls 100 breaststroke.
Manvel girls basketball
It's been a record-setting basketball season for the Manvel Lady Mavericks, and history happened before the start of the playoffs.
This season's Lady Mavs gave the school its first district championship by winning the 24-4A crown with a 13-1 finish.
The lone loss came against runner-up Friendswood 47-44 in the final league outing, and after Manvel had already clinched the title.
The Lady Mavericks are under the direction of third-year coach Fleceia Comeaux.
