High school roundup: Clear Lake girls secure regional swim title
When the Clear Lake girls captured the Class 5A Region 6 swimming and diving championship last week, coach Tom Landgraf couldn't resist giving credit where credit is due.
"The girls deserve all of it," the longtime Clear Lake coach said, "and I've never been prouder of a group of girls."
The Lady Falcons tallied 403 points to beat Clements (328) and the 18 other teams that competed at the Fort Bend ISD Don Cook Natatorium in Sugar Land, and they're looking to carry that momentum into this week's University Interscholastic League State Meet in Austin.
"The region championship is a classic example of team effort," Landgraf said. "The girls were far from the (region) favorite back in September, and I had to convince some of them to move events, but once they accepted their new roles, the dominoes fell.
"The other coaches recognized my design (Landgraf was voted Region 6 girls coach of the year), but I assure you the girls deserve all the credit."
Set to compete for the Lady Falcons on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19, at the UIL State Meet are seniors Ashley Dow and Casey Schnedier, junior Andria Riojas and sophomore Carly Glass in the Class 5A 200-yard medley relay, Schneider in the 100 butterfly, Dow in the 100 backstroke, and freshman Madison Varisco in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle.
Coaching retirement is a consideration for Landgraf, and if he does, this region crown will really stand out.
"If I do ride off in the sunset, I'm taking this trophy with me," he said.
Clear Lake senior Sarah Beardsley just missed a state berth with a third in region 1-meter diving.
"We ended up winning by 75. Wow!" Landgraf said. "I'm still excited over the victory."
Clear Creek diving
Clear Creek will have three divers at state including the sister act of junior Samantha Lera and senior Brooke Lera among the 5A girls, and sophomore Brandon Casey making a first trip in the 5A boys division.
All that region success turned into diving coach of the year honors for Clear Creek's Anne Wolweaver.
More state swimming
Senior Patrick LaBrode represents Clear Brook at state in his specialty event in the Class 5A 500 freestyle, and Clear Falls freshman Cameron Kerr earned the new school's first state berth in the 4A boys 100 backstroke.
Clear Falls is competing on the varsity level in certain sports like swimming with only freshmen and sophomores during the 2010-11 school year.
Clear Creek boys golf
The Clear Creek boys placed second at the recent Clear Lake Invitational at the Bay Oaks Country Club with a team total of 356, according to golf coach Phillip McAdam.
Alex Hickey, Ricky Baltazar, Moore Whittington, Dylan LeMire and Alistair McCartney combined to give the Wildcats a second place in the nine-team field, and the senior McCartney placed third individually at 80 following a three-way playoff.
