Film critic Jake Hamilton, 22, has a blast
Clear Lake High School graduate Jake Hamilton knew at an early age that he was destined to become a professional film critic: It's a passion he's pursued since he was a student at Seabrook Intermediate School.
Now 22, Hamilton — host of KRIV-TV's Jake's Takes - has three Lone Star Emmy nominations under his belt.
His career has taken him to Spain to interview Tom Cruise and to Paris for a one-on-one with Angelina Jolie.
He's interviewed dozens of celebrities, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Tina Fey, Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman.
"I've been a movie geek my entire life, so this is my dream job," said Hamilton, who graduated from the University of Houston in 2010.
"I'm incredibly appreciative of every moment I've been given and every opportunity that has presented itself to me."
Off to a good start
Hamilton got his first break at age 14, writing film reviews for the Houston Chronicle.
At 18, he was a film critic on The After Party, a late night Houston PBS talk show hosted by Emmy winner Ernie Manouse.
The show ended in 2007, and Hamilton joined the production team on the Houston PBS documentary The Last 24, produced by Manouse.
The documentary won critical acclaim and was nominated for three Lone Star Emmy Awards, winning two for editing and photography.
Not long after, Hamilton was booked as a guest on KHOU-TV's Great Day Houston, the local CBS affiliate, and later was given his own film review segment, Jake's Takes, which was nominated for a Lone Star Emmy in 2009.
That same year, Hamilton moved Jake's Takes to KRIV-TV, the local FOX affiliate, where he continues to provide entertainment news.
Joey Berlin, president of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, called Hamilton "the most exciting and enthusiastic new voice in the business."
Longtime local radio and TV personality Nancy Jay said she's not surprised Hamilton's work is being recognized.
"I am honored to be able to call Jake a peer and a friend. I'm sure I'll be asking him for a job someday," said Jay, host of Celebrity Spotlight, which is seen on EXTV.
"If Ryan Seacrest is the next Dick Clark, then Jake Hamilton is the next Ryan Seacrest."
Hamilton takes it all in stride.
"Being behind the scenes, watching films, interviewing celebrities and writing critiques is what I love ... I really could not ask for a better job," Hamilton said.
