High school roundup: Ranked teams highlight CCISD Whitley Classic
There's no lack of state-ranked teams at this week's 53rd annual Clear Creek ISD Peggy Whitley Classic at Clear Creek High school, and Lady Wildcats coach Jana Williams wonders what she's got her team into.
"There's no place to hide," Williams said after her Clear Creek team got off to a 5-6 season start. "It's a brutal lineup, but you want to play outstanding competition heading into district, and that will certainly be the case at this event."
Class 5A state-ranked teams North Shore (No. 8), Elsik (No. 13), Cy-Fair (No. 17) and San Antonio Wagner (No. 25) are in the field, and Cy-Fair will go for a sixth straight tournament title.
"Wagner is coming off an impressive tournament victory in San Antonio, and North Shore won the Katy ISD Classic last week, and Clear Springs is red-hot after winning the DeSoto Tournament, and I won't be surprised to see (Clear Springs) breaking into the top 25," Williams said. "It's an impressive lineup and we're excited about hosting the tournament."
Williams' Lady Wildcats meet Elkins at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in Butler Gym, while Clear Brook takes on Cy-Fair at 1 p.m. in Carlisle Field House.
Other openers on Thursday, Dec. 9, include Clear Springs vs. La Porte in Carlisle and North Shore vs. Dulles in Butler at 2:30 p.m.; Klein Collins vs. West Brook in Carlisle and Wagner vs. Baytown Sterling in Bulter at 4 p.m.; and Clear Lake vs. Elsik in Carlisle and Waco Midway vs. Deer Park in Butler at 5:30 p.m.
Play continues on Friday, Dec. 10, and the championship game is at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, in Butler.
The tournament started in 1957 and has been a tradition every year expect when it was canceled in 1964 due to a severe freeze.
Clear Creek senior outside hitter Rachel Hobaugh and Clear Lake junior OH Kiara Wright have been named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association 2010 Class 5A All-State volleyball team.
Wright helped lead Clear lake to the Class 5A Region III finals, and Hobaugh was a key figure in Clear Creek's trek to the region semifinals this season.
Joining Wright and Hobaugh on the elite team out of District 24-5A are Malorie Pardo (Pearland) and Shelbee Berringer (Dickinson).
Clear Lake (34-12) and Clear Creek (32-13) tied for the 24-5A title after splitting district games and both fell to Cy Woods during the regional tournament.
Football to basketball
Before heading off to play football at Texas A&M, Clear Springs senior Howard Matthews is hooping it with the Chargers basketball team, and he canned a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to beat Class 4A No. 2 La Marque 68-67 last week during the Clear Creek ISD Krueger/Carlisle Classic last week.
Also helping out against La Marque were Teris Bourgeois (21 points) and Jeff Beverly (20), and in a 77-74 tournament win against District 12-5A favorite Bryan, Beverly led with 28.
Clear Springs fell to Elkins 65-54 in the Krueger/Carlisle Classic championship game, but the Chargers came away from the event full of confidence, and are now considered by many the team to beat in 24-5A.
