Volleyball Preview: Channelview at La Porte
The Channelview Falcons (11-7) visit the La porte Bulldogs (20-8) Tuesday night at 6:30 pm.
Channelview is 3-2 in district play and led by 5'7" junior Malia Fluellen who was 2009 District 21-5A Newcomer of the year.
The Falcons lost seven players to graduation last year and Fluellen has helped fill the void with an impressive year. She has 198 kills for an average of 3.47 kills per game. Fluellen also has 37 assists and 25 digs this year for the Falcons.
Channelview's 5'3" senior Jessica Escalante sets up many of those kills for Fluellen and was a 2009 All-District first team selection. Escalante has 39 assists and 102 digs this season. She has been annointed "The Passing Machine" by teammates and averages 4.43 digs per game.
5'8"junior Janel Cox has 85 kills and averages 2.74 kills per game while teammate Molly Glover has 84 digs and is averaging 3.23 digs per game.
The Bulldogs are 4-2 in district play under new coach and La Porte alumnus Alison Kley who won 18 of her first 25 games.
La Porte's 6'2" senior middle blocker Jillian Humphrey has 282 kills and is averaging 3.57 kills per game. Humphrey also has 77 digs this season and was a 2009 All-District first team selection. She can dominate a game and had 22 kills against Deer Park in a three games to one victory earlier this year.
2009 All-District second team selection 5'5" junior Kimberlyn Patterson sets Humphrey up for many of her kills. She has 706 assists and is averaging a staggering 9.29 assists per game. Patterson had 44 of the team's 48 assists in the victory over Deer Park.
5'8" junior Kendall Womble has 217 digs and was also a 2009 All-District second team selection. Womble and 6'0" sophomore Kristen Nastally have a combined 284 kills.
