Clear Lake's in the mood for block parties
Interrupted by the aftermath of Hurricane Ike last year, National Night Out participation looks to be on the rebound in Clear Lake City.
The annual crime prevention event is to be held throughout Texas on Oct. 6, and so far, Houston's Clear Lake residents have registered about 25 gatherings with police, far surpassing last year's tally.
We're looking pretty good," Houston police officer Randy Derr said.
Last year, people were still reeling from Ike."
For those who participate in National Night Out, there are many benefits, Derr said.
It allows you to get to know your neighbors," he said. A lot of people don't associate with their neighbors, but you never know when you're going to need them in an emergency. If you get to know who they are, you can depend on them."
Houston residents living in Clear Lake who plan to have a National Night Out gathering are encouraged to register with Derr by calling him at 281-218-3900.
