Where did all of League City's day laborers go?
The League City police department's recent decision to crackdown on day laborers who willfully break the city's laws was meant to get their attention.
It must be working.
Since the police department announced the crackdown earlier this month, there has yet to be an arrest of a day laborer, Police Chief Mike Jez said.
They've been compliant," Jez said.
In the past, complaints often include obstructing traffic while negotiating employment agreements, criminal trespassing, soliciting in the roadway, disorderly conduct, as well as alcohol and controlled substance violations.
Police continue to patrol areas known for day laborers and respond to complaints about them, Jez said.
We've been moving them," he said. We tell them that they're trespassing, and they have to leave."
Jez said word has spread among day laborers about the city's crackdown because they have abandoned some of their hangouts.
They seem to have dispersed fairly well," he said. That's not to say they're still not in town somewhere."
