League City, day laborers and another opinion
League City Mayor Toni Randall says she fully supports her police department's new emphasis on cracking down on day laborers who willfully violate the city's laws.
Yet if they are lawful, she emphasizes that they have every right" to be in the city.
As long as they're abiding by the law, what can I say?" Randall said. Everybody just needs to abide by the law."
League City Police Chief Mike Jez announced a crackdown earlier this month, citing complaints often include obstructing traffic while negotiating employment agreements, criminal trespassing, soliciting in the roadway, disorderly conduct, as well as alcohol and controlled substance violations.
Some residents maintain that Randall allows the city to be a sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants.
Randall is aware of such criticism but declined to comment about it. She instead reiterated that she believes that day laborers are entitled to being in League City.
As long as they're abiding by the laws, they're just here," she said. I'm not going to get off on that one."
