Distinguished Friendswood HS alumni honored
published Mar. 29, 2011
The night belonged to six distinguished alumni of Friendswood High School recently. The 2011 honorees were recognized at a special reception inside their alma mater, FHS.
The event was hosted by the FHS Alumni Association, a division of the FISD Education Foundation. A catered dessert bar was offered the honorees as they mingled with friends, family and peers.
Being honored were Tanna Bennett, Lisa Camp, Chris Henchy, Kim Reed,
Carol Cline Vaughn and honorary alumna Joyce Baker.
Bennett from the Class of 1980 is an award winning artist in several
mediums with a specialty in watercolor. She has been a gallery owner as well as
painter in New Mexico, Oregon and Texas and has studied in France. She is currently
showing her work in Houston.
Lisa Camp from the Class of 1979 is currently the Asst Chief for the City of La
Porte EMS and serves as the EMS Chief for the Friendswood VFD since 1995. She
has more than 30 years experience in EMS, both in volunteer and paid departments,
and has been a paramedic since 1987.
Chris Henchy is a movie and television writer/producer and his credits
include Spin City, I’m With Her, Entourage, Eastbound and Down, Land of the Lost,
The Goods, he Virginity Hit and The Other Guys. From the Class of 1982, Henchy is
currently residing in both Los Angeles and New York City, with his wife Brooke
Shields and daughters Rowan, age 7 and Grier, age 4. He currently runs a production
company, Gary Sanchez Productions with actor Will Ferrell and director Adam
McKay.
Kim Reed from the Class of 1975 is an outstanding carpenter and construction
worker. What makes him stand out is the many areas of volunteer work that is done
through these trades. He has spent 13 years constructing homes for Habitat for Humanity
and has worked seven years at various times in a very poor area of Mexico, building
homes for those who need them. Currently, he is developing 10 acres on Hwy 288 south
of Highway 6 for a home for orphans and homeless youth. When completed, the facility
will be operated and supervised by Boy’s Harbor.
Carol Cline Vaughn is a graduate of the Class of 1945. At 18, she began teaching
piano lessons and is still doing so today. She raised four children with Conrad Cline as
well as earned her BA, MA and Ed.D. She and her second husband, a pastor, founded
Houston Graduate School of Theology and worked/taught at the graduate school.
Joyce Baker is the Honorary Alumna of the 2011 group. She is author, historian
and initiator of the Trunk Lady traveling history lessons enjoyed by FISD elementary
children. For the City's Centennial in 1995 she researched and authored the book
"Friendswood--A Settlement of Friendly Folks". She researched and authored the
applications for three State Historical Markers-- for the Fig Industry (in Stevenson Park),
a Recorded Historic Landmark award for the Cecil Brown Home (now the Alton Todd
office) and the Texas Historic Cemetery Marker at the Friends Church. Baker and her
husband Jim, (deceased 2005) using the proceeds from the sale of the book, provided
the ideas and much of the labor for a complete renovation of the Frank Brown Heritage Museum, including the addition of an outhouse and an authentic barn to the grounds.
The event, enjoyed by approximately 150 people, gave the honorees a chance
to speak to the audience after being presented heavy monolithic etched glass
awards with holograms of Mustang horseshoes on pedestals inside. The six also
appear on a perpetual plaque and framed poster, both of which will hang at FHS.
Chairing the event were Sally Branson with her committee of alumni, Kim
Montz, Daniel Gage, Billy Rearick, Michelle King, Dr. Beryl Cline, Floyd Brown, Jim
Hill, Dr. Myrlene Kennedy and Larry Taylor.
Distinguished Alumni are chosen from nominations from the public. For
