Area Cub Scouts make 'pocket flags' for overseas troops

More than 255 Scouts from the Pearland and Friendswood area recently took part in a "Pocket Flag" project.
The purpose of the project was to get miniature flags into the pockets of as many military personnel as possible around the world.
The Scouts folded each flag into a 2-by-2 by 3-inch triangle and attached a note that read, "A flag for your pocket so you can always carry a little piece of home. We are praying for you and we are proud of you. Thank you for defending our country and our freedom."
The "Pocket Flag" project was one of the highlights of the Cub Scouts' annual "Twilight Camp," a weeklong day camp where boys fulfilled requirements toward rank advancement that included archery, leatherworks, woodworking, sports, science and other fun activities.
"In Cub Scouts the boys are taught to 'do a good turn daily,'" said Camp Program Director Jeanne Ellis in the press release. "The Pocket Flag Project is an example of that slogan. After being folded, the flags are placed in small clear bags and mailed to military personnel overseas, many on the front lines. The purpose of this project is for our men/women in uniform to be able to have the flag fit in their shirt pockets, thereby always carrying a piece of home with them."
From the beginning, the "Pocket Flag" project has involved thousands of people from across the country who want troops oversees to know that here at home, they are remembered and prayed for. At last count, volunteers have been responsible for folding and sending off more than 850,000 flags.
