Buckets passed down the aisles at a Sagemont Church communion service this week netted $30,000 ... just enough for the Kemah family featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to pay off the mortgage on the house they lost to Hurricane Ike.
Although the ABC television show and donors paid to build Larry and Melissa Beach a new house, family friend Beau Egert said $140,000 was still owed on the old house -- which had no flood insurance -- and Rotary clubs from District 5890 who'd raised $110,000 to pay off the mortgage were still $30,000 short this week. With the Extreme Makeover Kemah episode airing this weekend, a plea went out to Clear Lake churches, and the Sagemont congregation came through with the rest of the money for the Rotary District in a single night.
"They just finished it out," said Egert. "I've seen Sagemont do stuff like that before. They're just giving people."
Pastor John Morgan said between 650 and 700 people turned out for Wednesday night's service at the South Sam Houston Parkway church (that's the one with the giant cross off I-45). As the church celebrated Easter, he saw a chance to "keep our priorities of helping people in need."
After sharing the story of the Beaches living in a trailer with 13 kids, cardboard buckets "exactly like they put chicken in" were passed around and quickly filled, Morgan said.
"I don't know this family at all," he said, "but everything I've heard is they're an awesome couple."

Its amazing how there is always one idiot in the bunch that feels the need to say something negative about an AMAZING family. These people contribute to society in a way most of us never will. Chuck, what have YOU done for your community lately. Thank you for trying to drag others down with your pathetic comments.
