Photo by Jenny MontgomeryLeague City will close Main Street Sunday morning to cut down an historic Butler Oak.
Crews will shut down the street from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. next to Helen's Gardens. The decaying live oak is the second tree from the corner of Main Street and Kansas, and its limbs stretch over Main Street.
Arborists examined the tree, believed to be around 130 years old, and declared it "structurally unstable," with decay evident deep inside the tree. City officials say it poses a hazard to passing cars and pedestrians.
While they're chopping down the tree, crews will also trim limbs from adjacent trees found to have white rot as well.
