League City won't crack down on cell phones

A League City councilman’s interest in the possibility of requiring drivers to stay hands-free on cell phones has hit a dead end.

Last month City Councilman Jim Nelson requested that City Attorney Arnold Polanco research the possibility and present his findings to City Council this month. But after recently discussing the matter with Polanco, Nelson decided that he would no longer pursue it.

“I don’t think I have the votes,” Nelson said. “I haven’t asked anybody, but just from the things I’ve heard people say I didn’t think it would pass.”

Polanco said the enforcement of an ordinance like the one that Nelson was interested in would have presented problems for the city's police department.

    "There were concerns," Polanco said.

    Mixed Thoughts

While I certainly want drivers to have their full attention on driving, I'm not sure it's fair to require hands-free use of cell phones while operating a vehicle. I think if that were required, then we would have to require hands-free use of stereos/cd players in vehicles. Doesn't the same principle apply? Should we not be allowed to eat or drink while driving (that requires the use of our hands)? Most of us have spilled on ourselves while driving, distracting us from our driving tasks for at least a brief moment.

At this point, I think we should be able to eat, drink, use our stereo, and use the phone while driving. If you cause a wreck because of your negligence, you're liable.

By the way, I don't use my phone while I drive.
