Road construction update: Texas 146

The construction on Texas 146 will cost about $43 million. Photo by Shock : FotoliaThe construction on Texas 146 will cost about $43 million. Photo by Shock : FotoliaYou've probably seen the construction on Texas 146 north of the NASA Parkway, but do you know the plan?

The Texas Department of Transportation is currently building four-lane overpasses that will take traffic on three roads over the highway:

• Red Bluff
• Choate Road / Shoreacres Boulevard
• Wharton Weems (up by La Porte)

In addition, there will be a ramp from Texas 146 to Port Road so exiting traffic doesn't have to stop at a light.

Frontage roads will be built on both sides of Texas 146, along with U-turns at each of the intersections.

Deidrea Samuels, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Transportation, said the Choate Road and Wharton Weems overpasses are supposed to be done by March 2011, then work is to begin on the Red Bluff and Port Road projects, which should wrap up by October 2012.

Ultimately, Texas 146 is supposed to be widened even more, but that project's not yet funded and there's no telling when it might begin.
