Curbside recycling will start on Jan. 5 in Taylor Lake Village.
Recyclables that will be picked up on Tuesdays are rinsed tin and aluminum cans, rinsed plastics No. 1-7, magazines, cardboard and newsprint. Glass will not be accepted.
Red bins for the recyclables will be delivered to residents' homes on Wednesday, Dec. 30, so residents who'll still be out of town for the holidays might want to avoid tipping off burglars by arranging for neighbors to place the bins out of sight.
Earlier this month, City Council approved billing each home $25 to pay for the service. The one-time charge will be sent out next month, but the city will not pursue those who fail to pay it.
In the meantime, the city is paying the $36,000 annual expense out of its $100,000 annual contingency fund. If there is strong participation in the city’s curbside recycling program, City Council would next year consider including the expense in the 2010-11 budget.
The city tried curbside recycling 15 years ago but dropped it after participation declined from 108 families to fewer than a dozen.
“I just hope that this time we have better participation from the community,” said Mayor Natalie O’Neill.
