Golf carts will roll in Nassau Bay next week

Golf carts can hit Nassau Bay’s streets next week.

During its meeting last night, City Council approved the second and final reading of an ordinance that allows the vehicles to be driven on city streets that do not have a speed limit of more than 35 miles per hour. The city’s highest speed limit is 35 mph.

Golf carts will be allowed on the city’s streets starting Nov. 19, City Manager Chris Reed said.

“A lot of residents are e-mailing and calling and wanting more information about it,” Reed said.

The golf cart ordinance requires that the vehicles be operated by a licensed driver and have certain safety features like operational headlamps, tail lamps, side reflectors, parking brake and rear-view mirror.

Reed said he expects golf carts to be popular in Nassau Bay. He even plans to buy a golf cart once he and his family move to Nassau Bay.

Reed said he wouldn’t be surprised to eventually see golf carts in each direction of an intersection with a four-way stop.

“That’s especially on the weekends and the evening times,” Reed said. “Our parks and a lot of our locations are going to be popular for them.”
