The Calder Road overpass at Interstate 45 in League City will be demolished this weekend, causing traffic headaches as the freeway is closed and vehicles detoured to the feeder roads. Photo by Wendy RudnickiWith a portion of Interstate 45 and its frontage roads to be closed from this Friday evening through Sunday afternoon for the demolition of League City's Calder Road overpass, extra law enforcement will be on patrol to help with traffic.
There will be four to five deputies from Galveston County’s Constable precincts working in the area around the demolition, League City spokeswoman Kristi Wyatt said. The city will also have a police officer at the intersection of Hobbs Road and Main Street as well as at Texas 3 and Main Street, she said.
There will also be two officers at Interstate 45 and Main Street, Wyatt said. The city’s police officers will manually control the traffic signals at each of those intersections, she said.
A map of the closure and detours can be found here. The work is part of a $21 million project to build a new flyover from the Gulf Freeway to Texas 96.
The city is preparing for a worst-case scenario with traffic, Wyatt said. It expects to experience lots of congestion during the closure, she said.
“We do think it’s going to be bad,” Wyatt said. “If you don’t have to go in that area, it’s best to avoid it.”
Although motorists won’t be able to cross Interstate 45 using Calder Road until next Thursday, Wyatt emphasized that League City's worst traffic problems stemming from the project will only be this weekend.
“Things will get better,” she said. “If people can just make it through the weekend then things will get better from there.”

Extra police will help with freeway's closure?
I just drove past this abortion of a construction project...Are you kidding??? Another TXDOT spin on how jacked up their timing is on these projects...GALCO is trying desperately to recover tourism from last years disaster and TXDOT is trying to kill business heading there...sick...And how are police helping??? By keeping Shipley's in business ???? WTF??? Angry hordes of drivers are exiting the freeway, merging/jockeying for position on the feeder with southbound traffic from 518...What are the police doing ? 2 cruisers are parked side by side nearby, officers inside chatting and passing coffee around...thanks for ....?????
